Menstrual Acne

The menstrual cycle is one of the most common acne triggers. Women often break out in acne in their late 20's and early 30's when this cycle becomes most pronounced. Acne will typically form a few days before the cycle begins and go away after the cycle is completed. The cause of these flare-ups are almost invariably hormone related—an increase in male androgens leads to over-active sabaceous glands. Pregnant women and women undergoing menopause and post-menopause may also experience hormonal acne.

Many women have turned to birth-control, or homone-regulating drugs such as Spironolactone as a treatment for these flare-ups. When used in small dosages, these drugs suppress the effects of androgens on oil glands, therefore limiting breakouts.

However, these types of treatments (birth-control especially), often have side effects, including moodiness, weight-gain, nauseau, migraines, and increased blood pressure (just to name a few). They also deplete important nutrients, such as vitamins B2, B6, and B12.

Additionally, you should recognize that these are synthetic hormones. It isn't healthy for your body to be exposed to them. When used long-term, birth control pills and other drugs can permanently damage your sex-drive. They may also increase your risk of developing serious chronic illness such as blood-clotting, and breast and cervical cancer!

Ultimately, if your system is clean and you follow a few important hormone regulating tips (included in the regimen), you should stay clear of cyclical breakouts.
